HMM Marathi Shala is a division of the parent non-profit organization – Houston Maharashtra Mandal, that is registered under the Texas Non-Profit Corporation Act of September 2, 1980. Our goal is to promote the culture and language from the ancestral Indian state of Maharashtra. to the children growing up in the United States.

The HMM Marathi Shala was inaugurated on Oct 12, 2013 with the goal to teach Marathi to interested students so that they can speak, read, write and listen in Marathi in a structured but playful manner. The Shala (school) has branches in Cypress, Katy and Sugar Land, with a total of over 100+ students and 30+ volunteer teachers. The school is run solely by volunteers. The Shala follows the curriculum formulated by Bruhan Maharashtra Mandal (BMM) in conjunction with Bharati Vidyapeeth, India. The Bruhan Maharashtra Mandal of North America is also a non-profit organization whose Marathi Shala project started a strong commitment and passionate interest to teach Marathi language and culture to the students growing up in North America.

HMM Marathi Shala classes are held every Saturday or Sunday and the Shala calendar follows the local school district calendars. Student Assessment is conducted via Semester exams in December and May. There are various cultural activities throughout the year such as Ganeshotsav, Diwali, Sankrant, and Holi, to introduce Marathi culture to the students. Students display their creativity and language skills through various activities such as the Annual Gathering and Talent Show.

All these activities would not be possible without the support of our dedicated volunteer teachers, who each dedicate 4-5 hours per week to Marathi Shala, and to parent volunteers, who are committed to helping the teachers and coordinators in every available opportunity.

The Shala also accepts donations from the community in the form of books, resources and of course, volunteered time. We’re looking for volunteers to teach and assist our teachers as well.
